NZ Steel Health and Safety success

The Spotless Facilities Maintenance team at NZ Steel are celebrating their milestone of being 18 years LTI (Lost Time Injury) free. A LTI is something that results in a fatality, permanent disability, or time lost from work. It could be as little as one day or a shift off work being lost, or months of rehabilitation. It can arise from a small incident, like a paper cut, or from a notifiable event such as a fall from height.

One way they’ve achieved this is that they are always looking for improvements to make their workplace safer and have employee representation on several NZ Steel Risk Reduction committees.

One recent Health and Safety initiative resulted in NZ Steel swapping out 52 large rubbish bins on site with smaller 80L wheelie bins. This simple reduction in the weight of rubbish being carried by our cleaners minimised the potential for manual handling injuries as result of lifting.

Contract Manager Bryan Joslin says; “Being involved and collaborating with NZ Steel to improve health and safety on site has been key to our success.”
