Tuituia ngātahi mātou ki te mana o te Whānau, te Manaaki te Kairangatira me te Ngākau Pono. Tuituia hei korowai tikanga tuku iho mō tātou.

Stitching us together as one are family and relationships, care & respect, excellence and integrity as our cloak of values. With a strong history in Aotearoa New Zealand, our business has its roots back to the 1800’s and has grown up with our nation. As we grow and develop, we recognise the need to strengthen our connection to Aotearoa New Zealand. Language is key to how we communicate and an important part of our culture. By embracing the three official languages of Aotearoa New Zealand – English, Te Reo Māori and sign language we have reset the values of our business. Values are an intrinsic part of the way we behave. Values guide the way we act. They can be thought of as the behaviours by which we aspire to live. They are the way we do things around here. They are the unwritten guidelines connected to the norms of the communities and societies we live.

Our Tikanga.

In the Māori context, values can be described using the word Tikanga, being customary practices and Downer in Aotearoa Tikanga behaviours.

The word Tika means correct and so Tikanga being to do things right.

In resetting our organisation’s values, we reflected on the behaviours we aspire to, the behaviours we observe, and that we believe our people will connect to. In developing these values, we have consulted with a range of our people across our business. At Downer, we are committed to building a better Aotearoa, by strengthening our relationships with our people, our customers, and our communities. We do this through striving to protect our environment. We pursue excellence through embracing diversity and creating an inclusive environment – so our people can be their very best. We keep our promises and do what we say to deliver positive outcomes for all.

The outcome of our journey was to reset our values which resulted in us centring around the values of Whānau (Family and Relationships), Manaaki (Care and Respect), Kairangatira (Excellence) and Ngākau Pono (Integrity).

Our Tikanga. Our values.
Tikanga is intricately linked to our three culture focus areas: we own the outcomes, we do it for our customers and we stand for each other. They are important and influence every focus area of the Downer culture - The Downer Difference.

Downer Donate

We believe our people know their communities best, and that’s why we created Downer Donate. This initiative empowers employees to nominate local causes that need funding and support. Each quarter, Downer reviews these nominations and contributes up to $30,000 across a selection of impactful causes.

Community volunteering

Downer community volunteering is a way to connect and engage in our local communities in group-based activities. Volunteering is designed to provide an opportunity for our people to come together to contribute their time and skills to assist the wider community.

Every Downer employee from across the business can apply for up to one full day of volunteering leave.

Whānau scholarship

Downer offers whānau scholarships to the children and grandchildren of their employees. We grant up to four scholarships of $5,000 per year, for a single year, to support tertiary study.
