In 2024 Downer completed delivery of a critical accessibility upgrade to the pedestrian crossing at Homai Station in Auckland, improving safety levels in preparation for the City Rail Link opening. This project reflects thoughtful design, technical excellence, and the strength of partnership-led delivery to overcome significant logistical, time and spatial challenges working within a live rail corridor.

Project activities included closure of two-level crossings and installing a replacement overbridge ramp, footpath widening, streetlight installation, staircase installation, landscaping and planting, and relining of the station carpark.

Uniquely, the new overbridge was designed and constructed in close consultation with the Blind and Low Vision Education Network New Zealand (BLENNZ), whose campus is adjacent to the railway corridor. To meet the needs of visually impaired users, accessibility was increased by incorporating high-contrast colours, gentle slopes, wider footpaths, bespoke lighting and tactile paving to improve levels of comfort, safety, and intuitiveness.

Applying advanced digital engineering tools, the Downer team overcame the complexities of the live rail environment. We produced a 4D simulation of the construction sequencing to enhance planning by visually mapping construction activities in real time and space before installation. This approach significantly improved clash detection, informed detailed construction methodologies, and enabled a more precise and efficient sequencing of works.

A key achievement was completing the project within a highly constrained 10-week window including only two Block of Lines (BoL). This required innovative planning, resource scheduling, construction methodologies, critical risk management and contingency strategies to meet tight deadlines.

We provided seamless collaboration between AT, Beca, KiwiRail, Auckland One Rail, and BLENNZ, to deliver a safer, more inclusive and accessible transport connection.
