Our operations have the potential to create noise, dust, vibration and contamination, so we work to avoid or reduce these impacts through careful planning, engagement and risk management.
Air quality, noise and vibration
Our activities can generate dust, odour, noise and vibration that affect communities and ecosystems. We plan for these risks from the design stage, applying practical controls to minimise emissions and disturbances. Where nearby stakeholders may be impacted, we engage directly to explain measures, listen to concerns and adapt where possible.
Water
Water is essential to life and a finite resource. We work with government and industry partners to deliver water infrastructure and treatment solutions, while managing our own use responsibly. Across projects we aim to reduce potable water consumption through recycling, reuse and rainwater harvesting, supported by site-based management plans to protect local waterways.
Land
Industrial activity can leave a legacy of land contamination. Downer takes a proactive approach to identifying and managing these risks when acquiring, operating or divesting sites. Our Group-wide procedures, risk register and expert teams aim to ensure obligations are understood, financial provisions are made, and remediation is undertaken where required.
Heritage
Protecting heritage is central to our responsibility as a community partner. We work closely with landowners, Indigenous groups, regulators and local communities to identify and safeguard sites of cultural, spiritual or historical significance. If unexpected discoveries occur, clear processes ensure impacts are minimised and respectful responses are in place.
